[GAME] Formula D Board Game Review

Hi Guys

Today we are looking at something different.

Ever wanted to be in the driving seat of a Formula 1 car on some of the greatest tracks around the world? Don't want to spend lots of money on expensive consoles, or a lot of time setting up a Slot car track in your living room?

Well from the board game makes Asmodee you can be in the drivers seat racing around great circuits such as Monte Carlo, Sebring and Hockenhiem, the name of the game is Formula D.

Table Top Racing

Formula D is a board game based on Formula One racing as well as Street racing. It is a revamp of the classic Formula De board game which was released in 1991. Formula D was released in 2008.

The game is quite simple but is great fun. Like the saying says "Easy to learn, impossible to master".  It comes with two rule books, one for beginners and then one for more advanced players adding more rules.

The game is quick and easy to set up and has the capacity to hold up to 10 cars/players.

The game retails for £39.99.

What do you get for your money?

This isn't your standard board game. It may look simple, roll a dice and move that many spaces, but it is so much more than that (as the rules will explain). You have to carefully move your car or cars round the board and make sure you land in the corners enough times as to not take penalties. It involves changing gears and careful planning.

The core set comes with everything you need to start racing with up to 10 players.

The set includes:

  • 10 Dashboards
  • 7 dice (6 Gear dice and 1 D20 for solving damage and weather conditions)
  • 2 Race tracks (Monte Carlo and 1 fantasy Street circuit)
  • 2 Rule books
  • 10 double sided driver cards
  • 20 cars (10 Single seaters, 10 Street)
  • And 70 plastic markers
The game is hard to come by these days but Asmodee still produce it as well as a new expansion each year. You can find it on Google Shopping search and prices vary from £30-£40.

My Views

I have had this game for 2 years or so and have only recently started playing again. It was great to bring it out again and have a small 4 car race with my brother. It got us both thinking and we had a great laugh. We played a mixture of advanced and standard rules which is another great feature of this game. When you play it you can set your own rules without ruining the experience.

The game is more fun when you have 4 plus players and even better if you run both Formula D cars. It is worth the money as you can buy expansions which gives you two extra tracks. The expansions always feature at least 1 real circuit and it is normally a circuit that has featured on the F1 calendar in recent years. I will review the circuits in due time.
