[DIECAST] Minichamps Review: Benetton BMW B186 Detroit (T.Fabi)

Hi Guys,

We have something new a different that I wouldn't normally do. We have a classic Formula 1 car from the 1980's. This model is the Benetton BMW B186. Driven by Teo Fabi at the USA GP in Detroit.

This car has some eye catching features and we will be going over them in the review.

USA GP Detroit 1986

The 1986 Detroit Grand Prix was held on June 22, 1986. Ayrton Senna secured pole with Lotus. The Benetton's qualified 12th (Gehard Berger) and 17th (Teo Fabi).
Sunday was hot and humid with a chance of rain. At the start, Senna led Mansell into the first corner, and René Arnoux's Ligier jumped ahead of Nelson Piquet in the second Williams.

The Benetton B186 wasn't suited to the twisty track of Detroit and as a results the Benetton team didn't enjoy a successful race. Gehard Berger suffered an engine failure on lap 8 forcing him to retire. Teo Fabi carried on to lap 38 but retired due to a gear box failure.

Ayrton Senna won the race in the Lotus-Renault and beat the Ligier-Renault of Jacques Laffite by 31 seconds. The final podium spot was taken by Alain Prost in the McLaren-TAG.

Only 10 drivers were classified finishers with the Brabham-BMW of Derick Warwick finishing 3 laps down.

Benetton Formula

Benetton Formula was previously Toleman Motorsports. Their first season was 1986. Toleman had 70 entries but only 57 starts and their first season entry was the San Marino GP in 1981. Benetton would go on to win 27 races out of 260 starts. Their final season would be 2001. They sold the team to Renault. During that time they would move the team based from Witney to Enstone.

The team would also be the second team in F1 history to see a change of nationality. (Shadow were the first in 1976)  and be the first and only team to win under two different flags. Changing from under the British flag to Italian flag. The team was under British licence from 1986-1995 and Italian from 1996-2001.

Benetton BMW B186

The B186 finished in the points in the first three races of the season, including a podium for Berger at the San Marino Grand Prix. However, the car's underlying speed was blunted by run of retirements for both drivers, and uncompetitive showings at events run on tight tracks such as the Monaco and Detroit Grands Prix. Nevertheless, Berger in particular had emerged as a consistent front runner by mid-season, although he was criticised in some quarters for driving with his turbo boost set too high for the car's fuel consumption in the early stages of a race in order to complete "glory runs" near the front, only to drop back later on. The car was most competitive in terms of raw pace at the five "power circuits" on the calendar: ImolaSpaHockenheimMonza and the Österreichring. The car was also very good through high-speed corners

Benetton finally won its first Grand Prix in Mexico. Despite Berger not having the fastest package, the durability and choice of compound of his Pirelli tyres meant that he did not need to make a pitstop for fresh ones. Berger scored the first of 10 career wins. The race would also be the last win for the BMW M12 engine.

The Model

Unfortunately I could not find the usual details about the amount of pieces and tampo prints etc.

My Thoughts

The car is very nice. The car comes in a different style box. It is part of the Edition 43 range. The box has the Benetton Formula 1 logo on the cardboard sleeve. The main difference of this car is the multi-coloured tyre walls. I like the bright colours and the fact that every tyre has its own colour. The car is eye catching and is actually in my opinion a very nice shape. I think the older classic cars do have a vintage and retro look that you can't hate. The car is well detailed and if you are a Benetton fan then this car is for you.
