[SLOT CAR] Scalextric Review: Ford Cortina No.21 Bathurst

Hi Guys,

Today we have our first Scalextric post. Today's car is the 1964 Ford Cortina GT that raced at the Australian Bathurst circuit and was driven by Ian and Leo Geoghegan.

1964 Armstrong 500.

The 1964 Armstrong 500 was a production car race held on 4 October 1964 at the Mount Panorama Circuit just outside Bathurst. The 500 mile race was open to Australian built production sedans of which 100 examples had been registered. It was the fifth Armstrong 500 and the second to be held at Bathurst although it is commonly referred to as the fifth “Bathurst 500”. The previous races where held a Phillip Island.

Official results reflected only class placings, with no outright winner recognised by the organizing body, the Australian Racing Drivers’ Club.

The first car to complete the full 130 lap distance race was a factory backed Ford Cortina GT driven by Bob Jane and George Reynolds. It was the fourth time in a row that Jane and Reynolds scored "Line Honours" victory.

The race was split into 4 groups, Class A-D. They were broken up into groups based on how much was paid for the vehicle in Australian pounds.

  • Class A Up to £900
  • Class B £901-£1000
  • Class C £1001-£1200
  • Class D £1201-£2000
The Ford Cortina driven by Geoghegan Brothers was in group C and would take the race lead mid-way after the faster V8 powered Studebaker had brake problems but would unfortunately the Cortina would suffer a break in the Generator bracket. This would allow teammates Jane and Reynolds to take the lead that they wouldn't lose.

The Brothers would finish 5th in class completing 127 laps out of the 130. 6 of the 7 finishers in Class C were MK1 Ford Cortinas.

The Model.

This model is a very nice classic. I love the boxy shape of these cars and their length. It's quite a unique shade of blue as well and the stripes down the center are made to pop with a thin gold outline. The interior is excellently detailed. You can see the driver as well as the seats in the front and back, there's even a small gear stick.

Car Features

  • Quick Change Braids
  • Magnets
  • Rear Working lights
  • Front Working Lights
  • Digital Plug Ready (DPR)
  • High Detail
The car has an F1 style motor but still has 18000rpm and is in-line configuration.

My thoughts.

I like this little car. It has some great features like the DPR and lights. I would love to be able to race 6 of these on a digital layout and have an old classic touring car race. I like that there isn't any wing mirrors either meaning less things to break on it. It has a nice chassis layout with the motor being in-line and the magnet being very close to the rear axle. The wheel base as well means that the car will have good mechanical grip as well. It would be a great addition to any Australian fan or Ford.
